When Your Child Has a Cold: Tips and Tricks on How To Get Through It.

So my little guy has a cold. My heart breaks every time any of my children fall ill. Here is how I make sure my little one (and myself) gets through a nasty cold:

1. Provide Lots of Comfort

Whenever any of my children are sick, I provide them with extra comfort.  They lay on my bed, stay by my side, read books together, I give them lots of hugs and kisses, and provide them with their favorite meals.  I even let them watch their favorite youtube videos! Providing comfort helps children feel safe and loved.

2.  Get That Humidifier Going

Having a humidifier is a must for children with colds.  There’s no need to buy a fancy one from a kids store.  Just go to your local drug store and pick one up for under 20 dollars.  Fill it up with water, sprinkle some salt and add a little drop of menthol (optional) to help clear up congestion and let it do its job.  Just make sure it is out of reach because you don’t want your children to get burned by the steam.  You can also use a cool-mist humidifier as well.

3.  Use Natural Cough Medicine for Kids

I give my little guy natural cough medicine.  You can pick some up at Whole Foods or any specialty store.  There are so many to choose from just make sure they are for children and do not contain any artificial ingredients that may harm them.

4.  Use a Saline Spray

Saline sprays are good to help clear out a blocked nose.  However, my 3-year-old hates when I approach him with it.  We rarely use it but if your child allows it, then go for it!! They work wonders! Also, my sister suggested I pick up nasal strips for kids to help alleviate congestion. It works wonders for her son so why not give it a try!

5. Vicks Vapor Rub on Feet!

I know, it sounds weird but it works!!! Don’t know how, can’t understand why but it works! Lol!

6.  Go to the Doctor

Most colds can be treated at home but if you notice your child is pulling at his ears, is lethargic, has a fever, or the mucus coming out of his nose is a deep yellow or green, you need to have him/her checked by his pediatrician.  Chances are your child might have a bacterial infection and will need medical attention.

Please let me me know what you do to help alleviate a cold! I’d love to know!

Thanks for reading!
